Christopher Townsend signs "Pledge Letter" supporting Equitable Life Victims as Lib Dems back EMAG

10.59.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 8th Apr 2010

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for South West Hertfordshire, Christopher Townsend has shown his support for Equitable Life victims by signing the 'pledge letter' of the Equitable Members' Action Group (EMAG).

Commenting, he said: "If I am elected to parliament on May 6th, I will support and vote for proper compensation for Equitable policyholders. This issue is important to a lot of people in South West Hertfordshire and it really is time that we draw a line under the affair."

Last weekend, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable said: "The Government has repeatedly dragged its feet [over the near-collapse of Equitable Life] and the Tories have been equivocal in their support.

"I have been leading on this issue and raising it repeatedly in parliament for the last ten years. I put forward a motion which was supported by more people, of all parties, than any other motion in the last session.

"It committed all parties to supporting a proper level of compensation for Equitable Life victims. The issue is no longer about the principle; the issue is about the speed and process."
