Nick Hollinghurst, County Council Candidate for Tring & the Villages issues challenge to young voters, "Politics is not a soap opera. It is important to us all. Come and join the Liberal Democrats"7.07.20pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 24th May 2009
New People, New Politics! Nick Hollinghurst, County Council Candidate for Tring & the Villages has issued a challenge to young voters. He said, " Now, more than ever, we need a new politics - and new people to make it work. Politics is not a soap opera. It is important - and it is important to you. Political decision affect us all - how many university places there are, whether you get a grant (like I did) or have to take out a loan (like my two sons). Politics decides whether you get a job at the end of it, whether you can get a house, or start a family, or have a satisfying career. Political mistakes can even cost lives. So we need to get it right - and at the moment we are clearly not doing so. The two old parties have failed us. Failed policies, failed attitudes, failed leadership. We need better. To get elected, under Tony Blair, Labour became the banker's buddy and the financier's friend. Now it is clear they have been (we have all been!) let down by their City chums. The tragedy is that they bought their fleeting new friendships at the price of betraying their origins and the people who looked to them for help. Labour have ended up with nothing and are able to offer nothing. But the Conservatives, beneath their show of policy camouflage, still represent the interests of those who own land, capital and the means of financial exchange. They too offer nothing - beyond the minimum to keep the rest of us in our place. A new start The Liberal Democrats offer broad-based politics and a fresh start. Since our formation just 20 years ago our MPs have increased from 5 to 63. They represent all types of community, people in all parts of Britain, in many different circumstances. Above all we are independent of big money, of big business and of sectional groupings. We are an inclusive party - for every one and on behalf of everyone. In Tring we run the town council, hold half the Borough Council seats and hold the county council division. Come and join us! Come and join us - at the ballot box, as a party member, as a supporter. Get involved, take part - and help us build a better Britain for all our people, young or old, rich or poor, fortunate or disadvantaged."
